Students turn their dull student halls into luxury pad with incredible £1,800 makeover
THESE American students have proved that you don't have to miss out on a bit of luxury just because you're living in halls of residence.
Skylar Bantz and Adeline Vela, first years at Texas State University, transformed their drab shared 16 x 16foot bedroom into a stunning home from home.
Along with six friends and relatives, the pair spent ten hours decorating their bedroom in Sterry Hall, nicknamed Scary Hall by former residents.
The girls swapped their desk chairs for monogrammed acrylic versions and turned the area underneath one of the beds into an entertainment centre complete with TV, coffee machine and printer.
They added some stylish faux brick wallpaper to give the room a 'loft feeling', and added customised headboards, a mini-fridge, coffee maker, faux-marble desks, a TV and white dressers.
Skylar, a biology student, and Adeline, a psychology student decided to move in together after meeting in an online chat group.
The spent the summer planning their dorm makeover together with their mothers.
Sheila, Skylar’s mother, told MailOnline: "We had to come to the room prepared with a lot of vision and just cross our fingers that it would work. We were lucky it did."
Speaking to San Antonio Express News she added: "We are pretty budget friendly, so most of the items we got were from IKEA, Target, Bed Bath and Beyond and Amazon."
She said the hardest part of the makeover was having to walk up and down four flights of stairs - as the halls were so old there were no elevators.
The team of eight even cleaned black mould growing on a vent in the room.
Sheila posted photographs of the transformation on her Facebook page and they went viral, with almost 2,000 'likes'.
Former residents commented on the photos, one commented: "I used to live in Sterry Hall and this goes to show what creativity and a little TLC can do to a room." Another Facebook user said: "I stayed in these dorms back in 2007 for a week for cheer camp and they haven't changed. That's scary..you totally made them cool."
The University has even contacted the girls about taking pictures of the room for their website.
