Why We Didn't Build A True "Master Bath"

Image
Over the past 6 years of sharing various home renovations, I have been asked SO many questions about Dave and my bathroom, and (more specifically) why we didn’t re-work our plans to create a true en suite with the master bath directly off our master bedroom. As you can see by the image above, our bathroom is only a couple steps from our bedroom door — so definitely not super inconvenient for us at all. However, since I get so many questions about this one issue, I figured I’d share the many reasons we chose not to give ourselves a true “master bath”. But first, here are a few pictures to show you what we were working with.  . Now that you can visualize what our bedroom and bathroom look like, here are main reasons we chose to keep our bathroom separate from our bedroom. 1. We have more usable space. Both our bedroom and our bathroom have more usable space with separate doorways that lead into our short hallway than if we would have tried to make a doorway off our bedroom going directl...

The Rise of the Luxurious Suburban Master Bathroom

Image
The 1986 edition of the International Collection of Interior Design , a trade magazine for those in the business, issued a bold statement regarding bathrooms: “The era of the utilitarian, puritanical bathroom is over and now it is returning to center stage as the place for luxurious, sophisticated relaxation in the home.” The 1986 bathroom would bring back the grand indulgences of the Romans, who surrounded themselves with plush beauty during their ablutions. This elevation of the master bathroom from the “necessary room” as it was euphemistically called, to its reign as the cornerstone of the master suite, was such a rapid and recent development, that it is easy to take it for granted. Bathrooms haven’t changed much since indoor plumbing became a standard feature in newly built homes at the turn of the 20th century.  This, coupled with changing societal expectations regarding the frequency of bathing and new technology such as the flush toilet, swiftly ushered in the era of the  mo...

Haymarket Crossing townhouses feature open concept designs, high ceilings and gourmet kitchens

Image
In Haymarket Crossing , Stanley Martin is building a community of spacious three- bedroom townhouses in a tree-lined neighborhood that will have a pavilion, benches and two tot lots. (Benjamin C Tankersley for The Washington Post) With a population of about 2,000, the town of Haymarket is tucked away in Virginia’s Prince William County . A little-known fact to newer residents of the Washington area is that in the mid-1990s, the Walt Disney Co. purchased large amounts of land in the area for a proposed U.S. history theme park to be built in Haymarket, just several miles from Manassas National Battlefield Park . Local residents opposed the idea, and the controversial plan fell through. The bulk of the land was then sold to a local business executive , who sold it to developers. While there is no theme park, there are signs of a growing community that has also managed to retain a certain amount of small-town charm. Mary Scarpinito, originally from Long Island, has lived in Arli...

GATES MILLS, Ohio -- The setting is straight out of a storybook: a Tudor-style manor on acres of beautiful, peaceful countryside not too far removed from the bustle of town. The interior is a combination of timeless and modern. The main level living areas have been preserved with classic architectural details such as arc...

$2.95 million Shawnee mansion for sale after $2 million remodel

Four years ago, a couple with three children from Mission Hills were looking for a home that would provide them with a Lake Quivira lifestyle . They stumbled onto the 6,500-square-foot, one- story home built in 1972 in rural Shawnee, about 20 minutes southwest of Kansas City, says Mike O’Dell, the listing agent with Keller Williams Realty Partners . They bought, gutted and spent close to $2 million remodeling and expanding on it. The result is a 16-room “ranch-mansion” that’s unassuming on the outside but crisp, polished and contemporary on the inside and surrounded by striking scenery and features. It’s listed for $2.95 million. The gated estate sits a quarter of a mile off Johnson Drive, encompasses nine acres and is adjacent to a 10-acre, spring-fed lake. A stone path leads from the house to a detached brown building called the “field house.” It holds one of the property’s most delightful surprises: a two- hoop basketball court . With its gleaming hardwood floors , vaulted ceili...

A Glimpse at 2015 Motorhomes

Image
Creative floorplans and continuing advances in technology lead the charge for new motorhomes introduced to dealers; Class B’s are the fastest-growing segment There’s a good reason why toy haulers number among the most popular RVs going into 2015 — and it doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with a garage. Well, almost nothing. Sure, a garage-on-wheels is about the handiest thing to hit the RV industry since a 5,000- pound hitch receiver , but beyond the ability to haul toys is the fact that the ramp door of such units provides a whole new dimension to camping. Simply attach the provided support jacks and rails, and owners can enjoy outdoor vistas from the comfort of their own patio. That’s no small feat. Neither is the fact that a 10-by-8- foot ramp door , converted to patio use, can add 80 square feet of living area — an increase of 20 percent or more to the average motorhome floorplan . That’s something that even outdoor enthusiasts who don’t ride ATVs or motorcycles or even ...
