Bathroom Decor at PointClickHome.com – Creating an At-home Spa

Image
Advertisement - Continue Reading Below There's something transcendent about a truly luxurious bathroom—but you don't have to go to a four-star resort to get the experience. We went to interior designer Kyle Timothy Blood , of Kyle Timothy Home in East Hampton, New York, and Eddy Doumas, owner of Worth Interiors in Vail, Colorado, for their ideas on creating a spa feeling in your own home. Soup Up Your Tub Mention the words luxury and bath, and most people's minds turn immediately to the tub. "I steer my clients toward freestanding tubs because I think they're sexier than undermounts with miles of cold countertops," says Doumas. "You can add a beautiful piece of furniture and a basket for towels to the floor space you save." Whether you prefer the romance of a claw-foot tub or the extravagance of a marble surround, make sure your tub selection has adequate length and depth for comfortable bathing. The newest programmable tubs can automatically set ...

Traditional Japanese Houses | Nippon.com

Image
Take Your Shoes Off Minka , or traditional Japanese houses , are characterized by tatami mat flooring , sliding doors, and wooden engawa verandas. Another aspect that persists even in Western-style homes in Japan is the genkan , an entrance hall where people remove footwear . The flooring for the house proper is raised a little off the ground to prevent dampness from entering and to keep the living area from flooding in the case of heavy rain. The lower level is known as the tataki , and was traditionally made of packed earth, although concrete is common today. After removal, shoes are put in the getabako —a cabinet that derives its name from geta, or wooden clogs, that Japanese people once commonly wore. A genkan entrance hall with a getabako (left) for shoes and a tataki (foreground). Heavy rain can damage roofs, so outside the entrance, amadoi gutters carry rainfall off the eaves and down the decorative kusaridoi , or “rain chain.” Rainwater travels along the gutter and down ...

Disability hacks for the Bathroom

As Disability Hacks for the Kitchen was so popular I’ve put together another one for the bathroom, Disability Hacks for the Bathroom. This is a list of things that I have found useful over the years. The commission helps to cover the costs of running my blog.  Use a bath or shower seat. I have both. Originally I had a shower seat put into my ensuite tiny shower . It’s fixed to the wall and can be pulled down for when I need it while the others in the house simply leave it against the wall. My shower seat is similar to this one with pull out legs so that it feels more secure under my weight. It is wall mou...
