How is it like living and working in Southampton, UK versus Bath, UK?

First, let me just correct something. You've written Suton. This might be confused with Sutton in Greater London. What you actually should have written is Soton, which is a common abbreviation for Southampton. I actually know where the University of Southampton is and I used to work for the University of Bath. The University of Southampton is located to the north of the city in what seems to me to be a largely residential area. Like the University of Bath, it's a modern university established after the Second World War. Both universities have very good reputations.

Southampton is a much larger city than Bath, represented by roughly 2.5 parliamentary constituencies to Bath's 1 constituency. Both cities have good rail connections but driving in Southampton is much easier than it is in Bath. Bath has two problems with its roads. The first is that many are narrow and the other is that it lies on many routes to Bristol, so, if it can't or doesn't make sense to use the M4, Bristol-bound traffic goes through Bath. Southampton has wider roads and isn't a through route.

When you describe yourself as a "visible minority", I assume you're referring to ethnicity, though it could be disability. That really shouldn't be a problem in either location. All universities have lots of foreign students and staff and I really don't think that racism is too big a problem in Britain. Yes, there are some racists and it's inevitable that you'll meet some at some point but it should be possible to live your life as you wish to live it without fear of harassment.

Bath and Southampton are similar distances from London in terms of travelling time, though Southampton is quite a bit nearer in terms of miles. Bath benefits from high-speed trains that Southampton doesn't have.

As for schools, there are websites that advise on where to live for the best schools. Not having children, I'm not really sure how to find them. However, I do know that competition for places at the best schools is fierce and it's a good idea to live well within the catchment area of your chosen school. In fact, it's a weird reality of life in Britain that parents with the greatest ambition for their children often choose the school and then allow its catchment area to dictate where they'll consider living.

I suggest looking at these web pages: About us | University of Southampton and University of Southampton . I think that a big plus for the University of Southampton is that it's a very successful university and having it on your CV would look good in the future.
