Spas and Ancient Baths of Bath, England

Image
Shares 169 From the roof of Thermae Bath Spa I looked out over Tudor and Georgian rooftops with row upon row of cylindrical black chimneys as Charlotte Hanna, assistant sales & marketing manager for the spa, gave me a primer on the history of Bath, England. Archeological evidence suggests that humans were visiting and worshiping the hot springs in Bath as far back as 8000 B.C., but it wasn’t until 2,000 years ago, when the Romans colonized Britain , that written documentation began . The invaders wrote of a lush, uninhabited valley where natural hot springs bubbled up from the ground. Locals lived in forts atop the seven hills that surround the valley, descending each day to graze their livestock, fish, and to worship the water. But each night they retreated to their hilltop abodes, leaving the pristine valley to Sul, the pagan goddess of water, healing, and wisdom worshiped by Britons. “Clearly, the ancient people of Britain considered this a spiritual site ,” Charlotte expla...

Taste of Mexico - Norwegian (NCL) Review

This was a family cruise with our 2 daughters 10 and 13. We drove down a day early from Northern CA to LA and stayed at the Best Western Plus in San Pedro which included a parking space for our car for the duration of the cruise. Basic hotel but breakfast included. Small pool and fitness room. Very nice and friendly staff. Shuttle to the port provided (10 minute ride). Embarkation process: Embarkation was pretty quick. After dropping our bags at the curb, checked in at the cruise desk and within 20 minutes we were on board (around noon). We brought 6 bottles of wine so were directed to a table where they put sicker son the bottles and we were charged $15 a bottle corkage fee . We went straight to kids club to register on deck 13 which was a good thing because a long line started behind us. It was Spring break so there were 1000 kids on board. We received a warning ahead of time (email) that some age groups may max out. This didn’t happen to us but I believe the More 6-9 yea...

Home furnishings vendors old and new continue to make products in the U.S. Bassett Furniture While domestic manufacturing's best days are clearly in the rearview mirror, there is a but detectable resurgence in American- made home furnishings . HFN spoke with some of the best-known companies--along with up-and-comers--that are helping to keep American manufacturing alive . While the business entities are unique in their offerings, philosophies and operations, they share some distinctive beliefs. Whether it's a conversation with Rob Spilman, CEO of Bassett, with a century-old tradition of making products in the U.S., or Trent Mayol, founder of year-old SmartDeco, there's a deep confidence in the quality of American-made goods. " Making products in the U.S. has a unique connotation that you truly care about the quality of your product," Mayol said. "It says that you're not willing to sacrifice quality for the sake of profit making. And Americans should t...

Italian Furniture Designer Patricia Urquiola’s Work Goes Beyond Just Furniture

In the harried weeks before Italians’ massive August vacation, Milan is a town of working stiffs. Even the beautiful people of its world- famous furniture industry are drones, slaving away to create the lust-inducing products that will hit retail outlets in September. advertisement Nowhere is the hive busier than on the two floors of a 1918 terra-cotta and ochre building on Piazzale Libia, where 30 staffers at Studio Urquiola are working on a dizzying range of projects: a Marriott hotel in Barcelona with Ian Schrager, a line of award- winning bath fixtures for Axor, sets for a Monteverdi opera in Spain, and interiors for the fashion fair Pitti Uomo , in Florence. The chief designer herself, 49-year-old Spaniard Patricia Urquiola , is spinning too. She must plan a trip to a factory near Venice to inspect some furniture. A protégé needs advice on a line of tiles for Mutina. New York is calling, eager to arrange a photo shoot at the Udine house she designed for her friend Patrizia M...
