Itchy Beard: Rash, Remedies, and Growth

Whether you’re growing out your beard for the first time or have had one for years, it’s common for the hair on your face to get itchy. Beard itching can be mild, and sometimes you may barely notice it. Other times, every inch seems to itch. It can wake you up in the middle of the night or distract you from important events in your life. Beard hair isn ’t like the hair on your head. It’s called androgenic hair , which means that it’s growth is driven mainly by your testosterone. More testosterone causes more growth and thickness of these hairs. Because of this, you need to take care of your beard differently than other hair on your body. The cause of an itchy beard can range from a minor to a more serious infection: Growing out your facial hair When you shave, you leave a sharp edge on the end of each hair inside its follicle, the tiny tube that contains and shields each hair. When the hair grows out, this sharp edge can scratch the follicle, causing it to itch. When you’re growing out...

Four Lush Favourites That Aren't Bath Bombs

Image
Lush continues to be one of my favourite places for body care and skincare, but I know it can be hard to navigate around their dreamy smelling bath bombs  and their  delicious bubble bars . Of course, I love nothing more than sinking into a bath full of luscious bubbles, but their body lotions, face masks and moisturisers all need a mention too, so today I am sharing my Lush tub favourites .  I don't want to blow my own trumpet, but I do like to think that my tweet back in March persuaded Lush to make their Sleepy Body Lotion  permanent. It's my top body moisturiser pick for the evening, when I want something luxurious feeling that will help me drift off too. It's purple, it's lavender scented and it reminds me of being tucked up in bed with a book in Autumn.  Lemony Flutter still remains one of my manicure must haves, nourishing my dehydrated cuticles and making sure that my brittle nails are kept in tip-top condition. Lush's hand and foot products tend to be r...

Why it's important to rehab firefighters in extreme heat, cold

Image
This article first appeared on FireRehab.com , sponsored by Masimo . By FireRescue1 Staff When we asked our readers in 2015 whether they’d rather fight fire in extreme heat or extreme cold, the responses were fairly divided. One thing we all agree on is that neither is our first choice. Yet, as one responder said, when the tone drops, you go. Heat-related illness is serious business, and firefighters are particularly at risk when temperatures hit the 90s and humidity hovers around 80 percent. For general rehab guidelines , NFPA is a sound starting place . NFPA 1584 Standard on the Rehabilitation Process for Members During Emergency Operations and Training Exercises can help fire departments establish their rehab process. The next edition of NFPA 1584 is open for public comment. The standard requires these nine processes: Relief from climatic condi...

Working up a good sweat: Hot yoga, saunas, hot tubs and more | Lifestyles

Image
Ever felt the sweat dripping off of you during a workout? How about feeling uncomfortably sweaty on a hot summer's day? Remember your palms perspiring right before your first date or job interview? And what about that spicy Thai food you ate a few nights ago? Didn't you sweat just a wee bit? Sweat happens. While most of us are secretly mortified at the thought of appearing hot and sweaty in front of our peers, experts say that the clear, salty liquid excreted by our skin is actually good for us. After all, it's the body's way of getting rid of excess body heat , which is produced by metabolism or working muscles. "Our bodies have a natural system in place to prevent overheating - sweat!" says Dr. Mark Westphal, a dermatologist in Carbondale. "The primary function of sweat is to cool off. Sweat is mostly our body's way of regulating temperature." A natural lubricant that prevents dry skin , the amount of sweat produced depends upon the number o...

8 best brands for sulphate- and paraben-free hair care

Image
You might have seen bottles of shampoo and conditioner labelled as sulphate- and paraben-free, but what does this actually mean when it comes to what we put on our hair?  What are sulphates?  Most of us will have shower gels, soaps, shampoos and cleaning products in our bathroom and kitchen cupboards that contain synthetic detergents. The likes of sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), sodium laureth sulphate (SLES), ammonium lareth sulphate and myreth sulphate. These are synthetic, inexpensive detergents that are very effective at removing dirt and also help provide that soapy lather we’ve come to expect when we wash our hair.  In some cases, they can dry out hair, irritate sensitive skin and make eczema worse , so some brands choose to use gentler alternatives .  Typically, sulphate-free products might not lather as much as others containing synthetic foaming agents , so those with finer locks may find they need to give hair two washes.  What are parabens?  Parabens are preservatives used...
