PHILADELPHIA, Tenn. — The sun was suddenly a pitch- black hole set off by brilliant filaments greeted by whoops, cheers and cries from enraptured viewers in a darkened Appalachian field Monday . Words cannot adequately describe a phenomenon seen at similar gatherings across the country, but totality will be remembered by those who saw it, and well-worth the hours, if not days, of travel invested. On the drive from Richmond on Sunday, electronic signs on Interstate 81 in Virginia — and I-40 and I-75 in Tennessee — warned bumper-to-bumper traffic not to stop on highway shoulders or off-ramps to view the eclipse. An impromptu campground set up by a couple of gracious area entrepreneurs , B.J.
