Texas 'bathroom bill' dies in special legislative session

Jon Herskovitz Aug 15th 2017 10:57PM AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Texas measures to restrict access for transgender people to bathrooms in schools and public buildings died on Tuesday as the House adjourned and ended its special legislative session . Business leaders and civil rights groups had campaigned heavily to defeat the bills, saying they were discriminatory and would damage the economy. The measures were blocked by moderate House Republicans . Enactment in Texas, the most populous Republican- dominated state , could have given momentum to other socially conservative states for additional action on an issue that has become a flashpoint in the U.S. culture wars. 10 PHOTOS Protests against North Carolina transgender bathroom law See Gallery ASHEVILLE, NC - JUNE 21: A display inside Malaprop 's Bookstore/Cafe in Asheville, North Carolina features books by authors who support the repeal of HB2 on June 21, 2016. A thrilling walk on the wild side among the Big Five

I used to love long road trips where I would stare through the car window at the hypnotising landscape. I’d only wake at the next toilet stop for snacks for the rest of the trip ahead and continue the same nap exercise all over again. Nowadays, my patience for sitting in the same position for anything longer than one hour is waning. However, the scenic drive to the Mountain Zebra National Park (MZNP) brought back my childhood memories. SANParks invited the media to view the park and the new accommodation set to open next month. I was already excited as I boarded the afternoon flight from OR Tambo International Airport to Port Elizabeth since I had never been to the Eastern Cape port city before. The flight took just over an hour. On arrival, after picking up a minivan rental, we began the two-and-a-half-hour journey to Cradock and from there, the final 25km lap to the MZNP. © Provided by The Star PEACEFUL: The cottages at the Mounain Zebra National Park . The Transgender Bathroom Debate Has Nothing To Do With Bathrooms

On Monday the Supreme Court announced it was remanding the now- infamous transgender case of Gavin Grimm to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. This comes following President Trump’s decision to reverse the Obama administration ’s guidance pushing public schools to let transgender kids to use bathrooms and other private facilities as the sex they identify with. The media, parents, and the LGBTQ lobby has been up in arms. Amid lawsuits and media blitzes, they claim these children just want to use the bathroom peacefully and quietly. They insist the unisex or separate male and female restrooms students have been using for the last 200 years of public education isn ’t enough and is, in fact, insulting to transgender students . This is absurd. While certainly every student should feel safe in school, groups like the American Civil Liberties Union are parlaying students’ desire for security and acceptance into a political agenda. Free solo mountaineering puts the climber at constant risk of death. Alex Honnold, pictured here in Kenya, doesn’t seem to care. PHOTO COURTESY OF THE NORTH FACE/TED HESSER Advertisement Alex Honnold was scrambling. This was five years ago, five years before the 31-year-old from Carmichael accomplished the greatest feat in rock- climbing history . It was mid-summer, 2012, and Honnold was on North Palisade in the eastern Sierra Nevada , in trouble. The fourth-highest summit among the 15 peaks in California with 14,000-plus-feet of elevation, North Palisade isn ’t considered particularly technical. But it’s challenging—especially when something goes wrong. Honnold’s plan had been to negotiate all the California 14ers in a two-week span. But he got sidetracked when he pulled off a big chunk of rock, and it was heading his way fast. He recalls the occasion over breakfast at the recent Outdoor Retailer trade show in Salt Lake City . He’s done thousands of climbs, but his issue on the So...
