Remodeling the bathroom? Keep the tub if possible

Image
Homeowners are installing clear glass showers with low or no curbs when they remodel; multiple showerheads are also popular. (Photo: ReBath) It's not that bathtubs are disappearing in Arizona homes; it's that showers are getting bigger and better. Bathroom remodelers say one of the most popular homeowner requests is removing the old tub and shower in the master bath and replacing them with a wild-and-crazy shower with all the latest spray-jets, bells and whistles. If this is your plan, be sure you have at least one tub in the house when you're ready to sell. You could turn off buyers with small children and maybe other buyers who love long bubble baths . The shower trend may say something about the graying of baby boomers. "A lot of it has to do with 'what do I have to do to stay in my house' and 'I can't step over the edge of the bath tub to get in and out any more,' " according to Kurt Kittleson of ReBath and Kitchens in Phoenix. Which Is Better, Shower Curtain or Glass Door?

Image
Q. I want my shower to look as high-end as possible, but I’m on a budget: Which is better, shower curtain or glass door? A. The choice between a shower curtain and a glass enclosure depends largely on the layout of your bathroom and the style of your home. For a stand-alone, walk-in shower, the answer is simple, said Jessica Helgerson, an interior designer in Portland, Ore. “Glass doors are almost always preferable,” she said, noting that companies like Century Bathworks and American Shower Door make some appealing options. For a combination tub and shower, the answer isn’t as clear cut. In that situation, she said, you could go either way. Glass panels provide a clean, modern appearance, but shower curtain s also have advantages. A shower curtain made from a textural material like linen in a solid color, she said, offers a simple, appealing look. And if it gets dirty, it’s easy to take down and wash. In a tight space, a shower curtain also “provides better accessibility,” she ...

How to Hang Bathtub Shower Doors | Home Guides

fit standard tub enclosures ." title="Jupiterimages/Photos.com/Getty Images" /> Bathtub shower doors are sized to fit standard tub enclosures . If you're tired of the mold that collects on the bottom of your bathtub shower curtain and the white mineral streaks that stain the rest of it, you'll probably find a sliding door a significant improvement. These doors, made of tempered glass, are easy to keep clean. All it takes is a pass with a squeegee after every shower. Installing one is no problem -- you can do it on your own with a few carpentry tools. You need to be aware, however, that the tempered glass is sensitive to impacts and can shatter unexpectedly. Measure the size of the tub opening from wall to wall with a tape measure and purchase a bypass sliding door kit that fits. You can use a kit for a smaller opening than the one for which it is intended, but not for a larger one. Tape the wall jambs that come in the set temporarily in place on opposite ...

Is a Walk-In Shower in Your Future? by Ray Dobson

If a man could simply drop his shorts and walk in to a shower, would he be inclined to take one more often? Perhaps he would if he could see something tantalizing waiting for him on the other side. And what about a woman? Could a glass enclosed, high-tech shower help wash away the stresses of her day? Could it perhaps even make her a bit more risqué? These are compelling questions and one way to find out the answers is to install a walk-in shower and see what happens. Walk-in showers are THE latest trend in bathroom decorating. They’re sleek, contemporary, and practically maintenance-free and right now they’re more affordable than ever. When it comes to the bathroom, too many people take this room for granted. As long as the bathroom is functional and houses the essentials, most won’t give this part of the home much thought. And that’s a mistake. Go take a look at your bathroom. Are you happy with what you see? Is it soothing and relaxing? If its appearance is somewhat sterile or ...
