The Best Shower Head Adds Value to your Finished Basement Bathroom

As any good basement remodeler will tell you, it's the little things that really make the difference. Installing a basement bathroom is a great idea, and it pays back for itself by 80% or more when the home is sold. If you could make a major difference in how much you enjoy your remodeled space by spending another $50 or so, wouldn't you choose to? There are few ways to make a bigger difference with very little money than by choosing the best shower head for your new basement bathroom. Enjoying a relaxing, comfortable shower is a guiltless pleasure. And with a growing family, it can be your few precious private moments alone before a busy day. To help you make the most of these moments, Total Basement Finishing has this advice for choosing the best shower head: 1. Choose a handheld shower head . While fixed shower heads that are mounted to the wall may give a sleek designer look to a shower, they can be much more difficult to repair than handheld models...

Bathroom Design Ideas: New Lighting, Shower, and Fixture Trends

Image
Spa-like details such as glass tile and soothing colors are a trend in home bathrooms, as in this one by interior designer Lori Graham . When it comes to the latest in bathrooms, spa- inspired spaces rule . Goodbye, fussy details. Hello, Zen oasis. “Turning your bathroom into something you might see at a luxury resort is really big right now,” says Shannon Kadwell, a designer for Anthony Wilder Design/Build in Cabin John. Spa-like details range from showers with multiple body sprays and rainfall “water tiles” to walls bedecked with dazzling glass tile . But the trend goes beyond finishes and fixtures. “In years prior, a bathroom was just a shower, a toilet, and a sink,” Kadwell says. “The modern bathroom is a multi-function room with separate areas.” Think distinct but connected spaces designated for cleaning, changing, relaxing, and even admiring the scenery. A house’s master suite, she says, has become a living space in which the bathroom and bedroom are connected via dressing are...

Leave it to Bryan: Bathroom Haven

Image
As featured in the May 6th issue of Maclean’s Photo courtesy of Kohler.ca Text by Bryan Baeumler Edited by Chris Daniels When it comes to renovation, bathrooms have traditionally played a supporting role to other rooms in the home. As we witness the evolution of bathroom design in creating personal mini -havens, this is beginning to change. Homeowners are opening their minds, and their wallets, to the idea of opulent bathroom renovations . The consensus is that whether modest or luxurious, the most private space in our home has acquired an important respite and importance all of its own. Renovation Essentials An average cost for a bathroom remodel in my experience ranges between $10,000 and $15,000 for a basic redesign and in the range of $40,000 and up for a more specialized design. Expenses can vary immensely, but often times they should directly correlate with the number of years the homeowner plans to spend in the home. If you’re looking at completing a bathroom renovation in a h...

TEN TOP TIPS FOR A BETTER BATHROOM

Image
I’ve seen some unfortunate bathrooms in my time as an interior designer. The ones that require the biggest overhaul and investment are those that lacked planning for important things like adequate lighting, ventilation and plumbing. Before you think about the colour of your tiles and the latest shower screen , consider the fundamentals. Take time to plan the space. Establish where your electrics will go, siting the extractor fan and your high-level and mid-level lighting. Plan your plumbing and underfloor heating. Lastly, factor in ample storage – my mantra, you can never have too much storage. With some clever advice from the experts, your bathroom will be a sanctuary. Here are my top tips for a better bathroom: 1. Keep a bath if you can. The bath is often the first thing omitted when people consider a re-design of their bathroom space . Installing a bath/shower is one solution, but you could also try freeing up space for a stand-alone bath by changing the way the bathroom door opens...

A Touch of Tuscany in the Bathroom

The world's gone selvaggio for Italian bathroom decor , which makes perfect sense to Cynthia Watson, owner of Accents of Salado, an Old World Italian, Tuscan and Mediterranean decor supplier in Salado, Texas. "In the master bath, the trend is for people to want sheer indulgence and timeless beauty, and traditional Italian design provides that. And more contemporary Italian design fits right in with modern, metro bathroom design . It's all polished and refined and so easy to live with." If either type of Italian accessory tickles your fancy, bear in mind that you can indulge in a touch of Tuscany on a small scale. No need for a complete bathroom overhaul as long as you choose wisely from the bounty of Italian-inspired and Italian-designed products on the market. Here's how: Try to match styles with what's already in your bath. "You can use Italian accessories to take your bath in a glamorous-retro or metro mix direction ," says designer De...

Pro Tips for Choosing Bathroom Fixtures

Image
When I moved in, my bathroom was outfitted with basic builder grade components that never really went together and to top it all off, they never really worked properly. I just made do with what I had, but over time, I knew I’d have to renovate this space and make it my own. To make the bathroom magic happen , we’ve partnered with TOTO, the Japanese manufacturer  behind those infamous toilets that do everything for you, and to help bring it all together we’ve brought in online interior design platform , Decorilla, specifically, designer Joyce Elizabeth Tranchida . It’s embarrassing to show these but here’s what I’ve been living with… (sad, I know): I hate the glass hand towel light fixture so much I haven’t even replaced the bulb that’s out! The toilet is so basic it doesn’t even have a brand. My basic, boring bathroom needed some modernization, and a brand-new cohesive look as it’s the only bathroom in my home. If you’ve ever looked around at finished bathrooms, you know just how mu...
