The majority of people don’t have huge bathrooms but that doesn’t mean you can’t get your relatively small bathroom to feel larger with some creative interior design . There are several ways that you can make the best use of space in your bathroom to make it appear larger than it actually is. Doing so gives you an improved bathing and showering experience and makes your bathroom more appealing to visitors, or to potential buyers if you are selling your home. The skill of effective tiling The act of tiling a shower unit from the floor right the way to the ceiling is enough in itself to give an aura of space as it draws the eye. You can build on this effect by using larger tiles. This creates a more expansive design effect . You may think that you need to use a pale tile color to improve your shower space but this isn’t necessarily the case, you can get the effect of extra space just as easily with a darker shade. If you want to break up the space you can do so by using different s...

As featured in the May 6th issue of Maclean’s Photo courtesy of Kohler.ca Text by Bryan Baeumler Edited by Chris Daniels When it comes to renovation, bathrooms have traditionally played a supporting role to other rooms in the home. As we witness the evolution of bathroom design in creating personal mini -havens, this is beginning to change. Homeowners are opening their minds, and their wallets, to the idea of opulent bathroom renovations . The consensus is that whether modest or luxurious, the most private space in our home has acquired an important respite and importance all of its own. Renovation Essentials An average cost for a bathroom remodel in my experience ranges between $10,000 and $15,000 for a basic redesign and in the range of $40,000 and up for a more specialized design. Expenses can vary immensely, but often times they should directly correlate with the number of years the homeowner plans to spend in the home. If you’re looking at completing a bathroom renovation in a h...

Update! Here’s what this bathroom looks like now (above!), after another bathroom refresh a few years later! :-) Below is the first refresh! Boy’s Bathroom Before & After So, last week I told you I was going to give my son’s bathroom a little facelift. And now we’re done! Just like on TV. Oh, wait. No, actually, that was LAST YEAR that I told you were were doing this quick bathroom makeover !! Holy cow, time flies when you are a busy family. A whole year! Anyhoo…let’s rewind the clock a little bit ALL THE WAY BACK TO FEBRUARY LAST YEAR and refresh our memories, shall we? When I say it was last year when we started this, don’t be fooled — it didn’t really take a year. We really only worked on it a handful of days. This was just a quick facelift , not rocket science. But we are just too busy to work on it five days in a row. And, it was mostly done awhile ago, I just was kind of lazy about taking pictures. This room I speak of was a fine enough bathroom to start with, better than ma...
