$2.95 million Shawnee mansion for sale after $2 million remodel

Four years ago, a couple with three children from Mission Hills were looking for a home that would provide them with a Lake Quivira lifestyle . They stumbled onto the 6,500-square-foot, one- story home built in 1972 in rural Shawnee, about 20 minutes southwest of Kansas City, says Mike O’Dell, the listing agent with Keller Williams Realty Partners . They bought, gutted and spent close to $2 million remodeling and expanding on it. The result is a 16-room “ranch-mansion” that’s unassuming on the outside but crisp, polished and contemporary on the inside and surrounded by striking scenery and features. It’s listed for $2.95 million. The gated estate sits a quarter of a mile off Johnson Drive, encompasses nine acres and is adjacent to a 10-acre, spring-fed lake. A stone path leads from the house to a detached brown building called the “field house.” It holds one of the property’s most delightful surprises: a two- hoop basketball court . With its gleaming hardwood floors , vaulted ceili...

A weekend in Bath – On the Luce travel blog

With its famous Georgian terraces , thermal spa waters , cream teas and Jane Austen – you can’t say Bath isn’t on the UK tourist trail . Its quintessentially English charms pull in visitors from around the world and it has so many historic buildings the entire city has been made a UNESCO World Heritage Site . From Richmond to Philadelphia, Tenn., for a glimpse of eclipse totality | Nation & World

PHILADELPHIA, Tenn. — The sun was suddenly a pitch- black hole set off by brilliant filaments greeted by whoops, cheers and cries from enraptured viewers in a darkened Appalachian field Monday . Words cannot adequately describe a phenomenon seen at similar gatherings across the country, but totality will be remembered by those who saw it, and well-worth the hours, if not days, of travel invested. On the drive from Richmond on Sunday, electronic signs on Interstate 81 in Virginia — and I-40 and I-75 in Tennessee — warned bumper-to-bumper traffic not to stop on highway shoulders or off-ramps to view the eclipse. An impromptu campground set up by a couple of gracious area entrepreneurs , B.J. Kile and David Matlock, in a rural spot not far from Great Smoky Mountains National Park was the brief home to 100 to 200 millennials, families and boomers who came from up and down the East Coast, the Midwest, California, Germany and England. Their vehicles ranged from older do...

Haymarket Crossing townhouses feature open concept designs, high ceilings and gourmet kitchens

Image
In Haymarket Crossing , Stanley Martin is building a community of spacious three- bedroom townhouses in a tree-lined neighborhood that will have a pavilion, benches and two tot lots. (Benjamin C Tankersley for The Washington Post) With a population of about 2,000, the town of Haymarket is tucked away in Virginia’s Prince William County . A little-known fact to newer residents of the Washington area is that in the mid-1990s, the Walt Disney Co. purchased large amounts of land in the area for a proposed U.S. history theme park to be built in Haymarket, just several miles from Manassas National Battlefield Park . Local residents opposed the idea, and the controversial plan fell through. The bulk of the land was then sold to a local business executive , who sold it to developers. While there is no theme park, there are signs of a growing community that has also managed to retain a certain amount of small-town charm. Mary Scarpinito, originally from Long Island, has lived in Arli...

Choosing a Bathroom Layout | HGTV

When designing a bathroom, the key is to look beyond this space. Does the style blend with the rest of your house? Now, keep in mind, you don’t have to be matchy-matchy and blending doesn’t have to be boring. But if your door knobs and hardware throughout the home are oil-rubbed bronze and you choose nickel for a hall bathroom, the change in finish could be distracting to the eye. Same goes for color scheme, except for the powder room, where drama reigns. If the master bedroom walls are painted a cheery yellow and you go for a burgundy wine colored bathroom , the jarring contrast will create a choppy feel, not the smooth transition you’re after. Unless you plan on renovating the bedroom and changing the colors there, you want an adjacent bathroom design to go with the flow. “If the bathroom is part of a master bedroom, it needs to tie in with color or texture—something,” says Eileen Kollias, designer/owner, Eileen Kollias Design , Boston, Mass. “If the bathroom is in the hallway a...

Taste of Mexico - Norwegian (NCL) Review

This was a family cruise with our 2 daughters 10 and 13. We drove down a day early from Northern CA to LA and stayed at the Best Western Plus in San Pedro which included a parking space for our car for the duration of the cruise. Basic hotel but breakfast included. Small pool and fitness room. Very nice and friendly staff. Shuttle to the port provided (10 minute ride). Embarkation process: Embarkation was pretty quick. After dropping our bags at the curb, checked in at the cruise desk and within 20 minutes we were on board (around noon). We brought 6 bottles of wine so were directed to a table where they put sicker son the bottles and we were charged $15 a bottle corkage fee . We went straight to kids club to register on deck 13 which was a good thing because a long line started behind us. It was Spring break so there were 1000 kids on board. We received a warning ahead of time (email) that some age groups may max out. This didn’t happen to us but I believe the More 6-9 yea...

Elderly and disable served evening meals at 3.30pm

Image
The crisis in social care is laid bare today as a report reveals how vulnerable people are forced to eat evening meals in the middle of the afternoon so overstretched care workers can cram in home visits. The report exposes how elderly, sick and disabled people are often left stranded without food or vital medication – including insulin for diabetes – for hours as care workers are delayed or miss appointments altogether . Families said many care workers were so poorly trained they lacked essential skills such as being able to boil an egg or wash somebody. miss appointments altogether " class="blkBorder img-share" /> The report exposes how elderly, sick and disabled people are often left stranded without food or vital medication – including insulin for diabetes – for hours as care workers are delayed or miss appointments altogether Experts warned that the report, by independent care champion Healthwatch England , was ‘yet another warning signal’ that the ‘crumblin...
